Our broader community:
rad’a montreal is a non-profit yoga studio and community centre. rad’a montreal is part of a broader community of approximately 20 Radha Yoga Centres throughout the world, including Vancouver’s radha yoga and eatery in the Downtown Eastside. These centers grew out of the teachings of Swami Sivananda Radha.
Swami Radha was among the first Westerners and first women to bring yoga to the West. In 1955, she was called to meet her guru, Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh, and became the first Western woman to be initiated by him. Swami Radha spent the remaining forty years of her life passionately committed to bringing these teachings to the West. During this time she founded Yasodhara Ashram and the Radha Yoga Centres, as well as a small press, timeless books, which has published her ten books on yoga. In 1969 she founded ascent magazine, which since moving to Montreal in 1999, and after 10 amazing years where the magazined blossomed into an international yoga magazine, decided to closse down this April 1 2009.
Radha Yoga Centres provide a spiritual community in the city, each with its own unique way of bringing yogic values and practices into our daily lives. Classes, workshops and experiential learning invite the student to go deeply into one’s own inner knowledge and create one’s own symbology. The Radha lineage offers practices such as Dream Yoga, Hidden Language Hatha Yoga, Karma Yoga, Kundalini Yoga for the West, and meditations such as the Divine Light Invocation.
Sustainability: Our vision is to offer a space that invites people in to cultivate the inspiration and practices that nourish and sustain our inner light, and creates a collective consciousness towards tending our community, and our world.
